This event, with American artist, choreographer, and creative director Charm La’Donna will address the role of choreography in music videos and live events: from the simultaneously celebrated and criticized appropriation of folkloric dances such as flamenco, to hip-hop dance performances that aim to empower a young and many times marginalized generation.
As the movement of bodies in public space is entangled with representations of race, sexuality and gender in popular culture, choreography becomes a weapon for the practice and circulation of forms of activism and emancipation.
La’Donna’s choreography has been featured on some of the world’s biggest stages, including the Grammy’s and Academy Awards, and was recognized globally in 2019 by winning a VMA for ‘Best Choreography’ for Rosalía’s Music Video Con Altura. She choreographed Kendrick Lamar’s groundbreaking performance at the 2018 Grammys, while shining beside him as the only female dancer. A few of Charm’s other choreography credits include work for artists such as Selena Gomez, Dua Lipa, Pharrell Williams, Britney Spears, 6lack, Meghan Trainor, Ella Mai and many more.
The conversation is moderated by Marina Otero Verzier.
